Ping.fm Automates Profile Updates

LOS ANGELES — Describing itself as "a simple service that makes updating your social networks a snap," Ping.fm may provide a solution to the needs of busy marketers.

According to the company, the free service supports more than 30 social networking sites with more being added regularly and allows users to employ both basic update posting methods as well as advanced custom triggers that "make it easy for you to post your messages exactly where you want them to go."

Triggers allow users to target specific services in three groups; blogging, micro-blogging and status updates. If no trigger is added to the message, it will be delivered by the user's default method.

Custom triggers can be used to post to the social networks of your choice while correctly formatted links may be automatically shortened in order to lessen the overall message length — although URLs of less than 20 characters will not be modified.

Pictures can be added to messages via e-mail, and services such as Twitter are supported; and third party developers have reportedly produced more than 50 web and desktop apps for Ping.fm to date.

Mobile Phone / SMS / MMS posting through iPhone, iPod Touch or standard mobile phone text messaging is supported as are instant messaging services such as Yahoo! Messenger, Google Talk, AIM, Windows Live Messenger as well as standard e-mail.
